UK Buy-Side Compliance and Financial Crime Market Update, Insights on Hiring Trends

Large Hedge Funds continued their expansion in 2024, with compliance headcounts increasing accordingly. Hiring within this space has been sourced both from peer firms and from Investment Banks, particularly at the larger, more traditional funds. While the number of new fund launches has declined compared to previous years, notable exceptions include Jain Global and Taula Capital.

Private Funds have also experienced another robust year, particularly within the Private Debt space, attracting talent across a wide range of experience levels.

Across the Buy-Side, there has been a notable increase in compliance hiring focused on distribution and marketing functions. This trend reflects the industry’s growing emphasis on aligning with evolving regulatory requirements and meeting investor expectations.

There remains sustained interest from professionals in Investment Banking, particularly those in Private-Side roles and Sales & Trading, seeking to transition into alternative Investment firms.

A standout trend has been the appointment of numerous Heads of Compliance, often involving individuals who had not previously held SMF16 roles. To secure this talent, firms have offered substantial increases in total compensation packages to remain competitive.

Additionally, the Infrastructure and Real Estate sectors have seen heightened compliance activity, with a surge in new Head of Compliance hires to support growth and meet ongoing regulatory developments.
